About the Event
Each year, WHO selects a theme highlighting a priority public health issue. Past themes have included mental health, universal health coverage, climate change, and the health workforce crisis. The theme for 2026 is “Together for health. Stand with science”, emphasizing the importance of scientific evidence in improving health outcomes globally. Themes guide international, regional, and local events, including educational campaigns, media outreach, and community activities.
World Health Day draws attention to major health challenges affecting populations worldwide. These include chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease and diabetes, mental health issues such as depression, infectious diseases, environmental health risks, and health inequalities. For example, cardiovascular disease claims approximately 17.9 million lives annually, while diabetes affects over 537 million adults worldwide, with numbers projected to rise. The day also highlights the importance of prevention, education, and access to clean water, nutrition, and safe housing.
